COMPUTER LAB

Here at St. John School we believe the computer lab is an extension of the classroom.  We try to integrate work done in classrooms with what is done in the computer lab.  Computers are used as a tool to enhance the student’s’ learning. 

Kindergarten and First Grade:

  • Parts of a computer:  screen, keyboard, mouse

  • Basic screen elements:  menus, folders, icons, applications

  • Basic commands:  open, close, save, quit

  • Integrate math, science, social studies, religion and language arts using games

  • Learn basic drawing tools

  • Begin to learn homerow and basic keyboarding skills

  • Find keys on keyboard by typing names (Kindergarten) and sentences (1st Grade)

Second Grade:

  • Demonstrate proper keyboarding position using guide keys

  • Use function keys, symbols and numbers on keyboard

  • Type and illustrate a sentence

  • Open and close applications

  • Change font, size and style, use copy and paste commands

  • Add and edit graphics

 Third Grade:

  • Begin keyboarding using Type to Learn 3 program; use correct finger position

  • Integrate math, science, social studies, religion and language arts

  • Open close and save files

  • Use drawing tools

  • Navigate the internet; find a website, use bookmarks

  • Create a multi-media presentation

Fourth Grade:

  • Use basic touch typing method (10 WPM with 90% accuracy)

  • Type and format a report, utilize cut, copy and paste functions within this document, use spell check

  • Produce graphs and charts

  • Use the internet properly, follow usage policies

  • Create a multi-media project

Fifth Grade:

  • Use basic touch typing method (15 WPM with 90% accuracy)

  • Type and format a report, use columns, tabs, line spacing, add and edit graphics

  • Create a spreadsheet, explain basic terms; row, cell, column—locate cell addresses

  • Access information from the internet, download and image from a site

  • Site sources of information gained from internet resources; abide by copyright laws

Sixth Grade:

  • Use basic touch typing method (20 WPM with 90% accuracy)

  • Type and format a business letter and envelope

  • Use bullets and numbering

  • Utilize cut, copy and paste functions between documents

  • Utilize basic application functions through the use of toolbars, menus and keyboard shortcuts

  • Site sources of information gained from internet resources; abide by copyright laws

  • Construct a simple spreadsheet, enter data and interpret information using charts and graphs

  • Create a multi-media project
