  1. Our academic program is effective and we have results to prove it.
    1. Our alumni consistently account for a high percentage of the top achievers of the Waunakee High School senior graduating classes. Keep in mind that our students represent only 10% or less of each of the graduating classes. Some recent examples**:
      • In 2011, five (20%) of the twenty-five students awarded a "Portfolio"* status by the Waunakee High School were graduates of Saint John School.
      • In 2010, the Valedictorian was a graduate of our school.
      • In 2009, two of our students were recognized for top honors due to academic performance**
      • In 2008, four (40%) of the top ten students were graduates of Saint John School.
      • In 2007, the top two students of the Waunakee High School seniors - Valedictorian and Salutatorian - were graduates of our school.
      • *Portfolios are awarded to the top students receiving at least 21 points through their high school career. Points are earned by achieving high grade points each semester, etc.
**In 2010, the Waunakee High School discontinued ranking students.

    2. Over 90% of our students in grades 3 - 6 consistently score in the 85th-99th percentile on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills national standardized test in areas of Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

  2. Our class sizes remain small to allow more individualized attention in the classroom. Our classes range in size from 11 to 20. We generally have two classrooms of the same grade which allows students diversity in personalities and friendships at lunch and recess, but individual attention in the classroom. Our teachers understand the needs of each of their students. We also offer additional resources for children with special learning needs.

  3. Spiritual growth is part of our curriculum. Students share in prayer every day and learn about what it means to be a Christian. They are taught the “Golden Rule” and how to live by it. Religion class is part of their core curriculum and is also interwoven into other class subjects. From kindergarten through sixth grade our students take turns leading the weekly school mass including doing readings, singing, taking up gifts and more.

  4. Our state-of-the art technology lab has all the bells and whistles! From preschool through sixth grade, our students participate in Computer Lab. They use the lab to help increase their computer knowledge and skills. By the time our students graduate, they are able to type the required number of words per minute, conduct research for class projects and have a knowledge of computer programs that will help them to succeed with future projects in their academic career. The lab is equipped with the newest technology including a roomful of Apple computers, smart boards and other key equipment. See our Technology Lab.

  5. World Languages is part of our curriculum. All students participate in specialized language classes including Spanish, French and Japanese. Our preschoolers even take part in Spanish class! (See our World Languages classroom.)

  6. Service learning is an important part of our school life. All students from Preschool through sixth grade participate in a variety of community projects throughout the year. It is part of the difference we offer. Studies have shown a high correlation between service project work and strong academic performance in children, too! Here are some of the recent projects our students have been involved in:
    • Kids Against Hunger: Chili Feed
    • Thanksgiving meals for the Waunakee Food Pantry
    • Decorated Christmas cookies for our senior citizens
    • Haiti Collection Calendar and a World Market Sale to support Haiti in need

  7. We offer a dedicated inter-mural sports program for students in grades 5 and 6. At an early age, our students are learning organized, team sports such as softball, volleyball and basketball. They are working on their athletic skills years before other schools. Learn more about our Athletic Program.
  8. We participate in the Madison Area Independent Sports League which allows our students experience in competitive sports play. This participation makes a big difference. Starting skill development earlier than most schools gives our students a competitive edge in their athletic career. Many of our students have earned positions on varsity teams early in their high school career.

  9. Our teachers are passionate about what they do. Not only do our teachers have excellent credentials, but they have passion for what they do. They have chosen to teach in a Catholic school because they believe in our academic and spiritual program and the learning environment we offer.

  10. Our children develop public speaking skills beginning in kindergarten. Our students gain experience speaking in front of others at church, our Spring and Christmas concerts and class plays which helps them develop excellent public speaking skills. This also helps increase their self esteem and leadership skills at an early age.

  11. Our school promotes strong family involvement. We understand the importance of strong family support in a child's life. Our principal and staff encourage family involvement in the school and classroom by providing opportunities throughout the school day and at all of our special events.
